eSIM basics for travelers

What an eSIM is, how to check your phone supports one, and when to set it up.

An eSIM is a digital SIM card. Instead of swapping a small plastic card, you install a data plan on your phone by scanning a code or using an app. For travelers, it is often the simplest way to have mobile data on arrival.

Check your phone first

When to set it up

Install the eSIM before you leave, while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Many plans let you install early and start counting days only when you connect at your destination, but terms differ, so read the activation rules of the plan you choose.

Keep your home number

Most phones can hold more than one plan. You can keep your home number active for calls and texts, such as verification codes, while using the travel eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your home plan if you do not want to be charged for it.

Put it into practice

The planner adds an eSIM step to your booking timeline for any trip that crosses a border.
