What to book ahead, and what to leave open

A short list of what sells out, and a long list of what does not need booking at all.

Booking everything in advance makes a trip rigid. Booking nothing can mean missing the one thing you went for. The useful middle is to book the few things that run out and leave the rest open.

Usually worth booking ahead

Usually fine to leave open

When to book

The planner's booking timeline counts back from your first day: transport about two months out, lodging about six weeks out, and anything that sells out about three weeks out. These are defaults, not rules. Peak seasons and popular places need more lead time.

Check entry requirements early

Visas, electronic travel authorizations, and arrival registrations differ by passport and destination, and they change. Check the destination government's official website well before you book anything that cannot be refunded.
